Zora Neale Hurston received a Guggenheim Fellowship during the Great Depression. She used the money to tour Jamaica and Haiti and documented her experiences for the purpose of this book. Published in 1938, Tell My Horse offers the reader a glimpse into Caribbean history, politics and culture from the perspective of a pre-civil rights black anthropologist.
